Re:Fiction

It can be very easy to fall into writing protagonists who are very similar to yourself. By pushing ourselves out of this comfort zone, we can create a wider array of characters and stories.

Write a short story about a protagonist who is very different from you (e.g. gender, sexual orientation, age, occupation, economic status).

Take this writing prompt for a spin:

  • How do these differences make the characters life easier or more difficult?
  • Take the opportunity to conduct research to help craft the character.
  • Resist the urge to be stereotypical.
  • Has your character ever been the target of discrimination? Or are they discriminatory?
