Question: Who is your favorite author and why?
My favorite author is Anton Chekhov. It’s been well said that none of Chekhov’s characters is completely good or completely bad. A major part of his genius lay in his ability to portray the essential humanity in everyone. Related to that extraordinary ability was his equally extraordinary ability to transcend the Western fixation on conflict and present subtly evolving situations as fully satisfying art works.
About Jim Curtis
I acquired my love of Chekhov in the process of obtaining a PhD in Russian. I taught Russian for 31 years at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Now that I’m a Professor Emeritus, I have the time to write fiction. I’m working on an anthology of short stories in the style of magical realism, including one that I call “The Posthumous Works of Anton Chekhov.”
